Finding peace in the digital world
Digital Spirituality
2017 - This project is a reflection of the potential shapes of spiritual architecture. After a VR meeting with Jeremy Nickel of evolvr.com (formerly sacredvr.com), I attempted to create a space that could fulfill the needs of a diverse online community looking for transcendence in the digital world.
While Jeremy mostly does guided meditation in VR, he is part of the Unitarian Universalism Fellowship ministry. As such, it was important to understand the architectural heritage and the general practices of the religion.
The denomination believes in the celebration of all religions, it is conceptually a universal spiritual space open to atheists and agnostics and theists.
The walls of the church explode gloriously towards the sky, blowing past the physical limitation so often mocked by Gothic churches pinnacles.
Rather than simply transforming the light from the outside, the church is lit from the inside and its undulating walls remind of of flames or an explosion.
Inside the cave, different colors emanate, creating a cacophony of colors merging onto the walls.
The façade is pieced throughout, providing the shell of a shelter and shifting visual connection between the inside and the outside.
The VR Church project was modelled in VR using Google Blocks.
The project has not yet been released in VR due to the complexity of optimizing the performance and baking the lighting.
